In 2007 we discovered that many of the children we were working with in Nicaragua only had no hope of going to High School. High school is FREE! But the boys would just join a gang, and many of the girls would become pregnant by the time they turned 14 years old. What's the problem? The students had goals and desires, but no hope! The High School was as far as 8 miles away for some students. The bus cost 50 cents each way. That's $25 each month. The single mom of the family was only bringing home $40 each month. There was no hope!
So, with our Nicaraguan leaders we started the "Bus Scholarship". This Scholarship pays the student's bus fare! They do the rest of the work! We began with 2 students, then the next year added 10 more. We planned to add 10 more each year until we had 50 students in High School. As 10 would graduate we would add 10 more and maintain 50 students. BUT five years later the first 10 High School graduates qualified for University!! So we kept them in the program. Now we have 90 students in the Scholarship program. 60 in High School and 30 in University. We will soon be at 100!
